Network Overview

Merit Network, Inc., formed in 1966 to provide "computer-sharing" between Michigan State University, University of Michigan and Wayne State University, continues its 40 year history of providing leading-edge networking in Michigan and beyond.

From the initial 2.4 Kbps "host-to-host" connections, Merit's network has evolved to encompass a 10 Gbps facilities-based core network. Utilizing dark fiber, Merit has deployed CWDM optical equipment to light and operate a state-of-the-art network for Michigan's research and education community.

Building on the core network, Merit now has an ambitious plan underway to develop 1 Gbps regional links throughout Michigan. When complete, Merit will provide a statewide facilities-based optical network connecting both peninsulas to the worldwide research and education community.

Michigan's research and education institutions will have access to a cost-effective, network with the necessary capacity and engineering performance to support such high bandwidth applications as: distributed computing, distance/interactive learning, large-scale data transfers, videoconferencing, tele-immersion, virtual laboratories, remote instrumentation and digital libraries.
